A magyar sertéságazat középtávú kilátásai AgEcon
Nyars, Levente.

An Evaluation of U.S. Hog Producer Preferences Toward Autonomy AgEcon
Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Davis, Christopher G.; Rahelizatovo, Noro C..
Hog farmers’ preferences for autonomy are assessed through the use of eight questions dealing with their preferences for general decision making and with respect to specific management actions. Farmers generally preferred to make a higher percentage of the decisions about their operations, especially older producers and those who operated farrowing units. Farmers who placed lower values on autonomy finished hogs, were nearing retirement, valued social relationships with other farmers more highly, had higher off-farm income, or were larger farmers.

Análise de risco de sistemas de produção de suínos, integrado e independente, em períodos de alta e baixa rentabilidade AgEcon
Rocha, Denis Teixeira da; Moura, Altair Dias de; Girotto, Ademir Francisco.
This research analyzed the integrated and independent systems of pork production in Brazil, using multiple case studies, which focused on confined and complete-cycle producing units of swines, in the high and low profits periods of the activity. The study focused on the pork production of the State of Santa Catarina (SC), Brazilian’s greatest producer of swines, and presenting the predominance of integrated production, and on the Vale do Piranga (MG) region, one of the main Brazilian regions of the independent production system. The work analyzed the yield of the two systems of pork production through the analysis of the performance of each system in different scenarios. The costs and incomes (economic efficiency) of six producing pork farms, in which...

Analysis and optimization regarding the activity of a Hungarian Pig Sales and Purchase Cooperation AgEcon
Balogh, Peter; Ertsey, Imre; Fenyves, Veronika; Nagy, Lajos.
In many ways, the Hungarian pork chain faces considerable disadvantages when compared to the situation in competing countries. In countries endowed with a modern meat chain, heavy concentration is the rule, but in Hungary decentralization still prevails, although thankfully the chain is not disintegrating even further. In our research we used the operation of co-operatives as a model in terms of a generalized network problem. The model allows the quantification of the number of pigs from given farms to slaughterhouses, the maximum sales revenue, the delivery threshold prices, and an analysis of the impact co-operative members exert on sales revenues.

Economies of scale in the production of swine manure Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Losinger,W.C.; Sampath,R.K..
Manure production on grower/finisher swine operations in the United States was examined using data from 184 grower/finisher swine operations that participated in the United States National Animal Health Monitoring System's 1995 National Swine Study. Two methods were used: one, assuming that pigs produced 8.4% of their body weight in manure each day; another using the difference between feed fed and weight gained as a proxy variable to study manure production. Using this latter approach, a production function was developed. The function exhibited diminishing returns to scale when food waste was not fed to pigs, but constant returns to scale when food waste was included in their diets. The difference between feed fed and weight gained was lower on operations...

Financial losses in pork supply chain: a study of the pre-slaughter handling impacts REA
REIS,JOÃO G. M. DOS; MACHADO,SIVANILZA T.; SANTOS,RODRIGO C.; NÄÄS,IRENILZA DE A.; OLIVEIRA,RONE V..
Brazil is amongst the world’s largest swine producers. However, its competitiveness has been vulnerable due to a lack of cooperation between the supply chain players. This condition makes the financial losses to be evaluated taking into account only an individual node, and most of the time, these damages are imputed by swine breeders. Living weight losses occur between the farm to slaughterhouses, and the main cause of these losses is the pre-slaughter handling, especially during animal transportation. In this research, we analyzed the pre-slaughter handling in a swine farm in Brasilândia, MS, Brazil. Analyzed data were provided by five slaughterhouses (farm clients) from the studied region, in which it was considered living weight losses, carcass...

Lessons from the Danish ban on feed-grade antibiotics AgEcon
Hayes, Dermot J.; Jensen, Helen H..
McDonald's Corporation, one of the largest buyers of meat in the U.S. fast-food industry, recently adopted a policy that prohibits its direct suppliers from using medically important antibiotics as growth promotants in food animals after 2004. Although the implications of such a voluntary ban in the United States remain to be seen, recent experiences in Denmark provide some comparable evidence on the effects for hog production. An economic analysis, compiled from information gleaned from interviews with Danish veterinarians, farmers, economists, and industry analysts, estimates the economic costs of an antibiotics ban on pork producers in the United States. Denmark first imposed a ban in pork production at the finishing stage, which was considered a...

Live performance, carcass quality, and economic assessment of over 100kg slaughtered pigs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,E.A.; Bertol,T.M.; Coldebela,A.; Santos Filho,J.I.; Scandolera,A.J.; Warpechowski,M.B..
Recent genetic improvement has developed pigs with maximum potential for protein deposit at higher weights; however, their optimal slaughter weight still needs to be determined. The objective of the study was to evaluate live performance, carcass traits, and economic viability of 417 Agroceres PIC pigs slaughtered with 100, 115, 130, and 145kg live weight. Pigs were reared in pens with 10-11 barrows and gilts each, offered a feed allowance of 2.8kg/pig/day until the following slaughter weights (SW): 99.65±0.82kg, 118.53±0.98kg, 133.97±1.17kg, and 143.90±1.24. There was no interaction between sex and SW (P>0.05). Backfat thickness, fat area, and loin eye area linearly increased with SW (P<0.001; R2: 70.12-77.44%), and carcass yield increased in a...

Meat quality and cut yield of pigs slaughtered over 100kg live weight Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Bertol,T.M.; Oliveira,E.A.; Coldebella,A.; Kawski,V.L.; Scandolera,A.J.; Warpechowski,M.B..
Meat quality and cut yield of pigs slaughtered between 100 and 150kg live weight were evaluated. Pigs (417 Agroceres PIC barrows and gilts) were fed a daily allowance of 2.8kg per head from 80kg until 100.71±0.85, 118.58±0.99, 134.07±1.18 or 143.90±1.24kg live weight. Seventy-one pigs were used for the evaluation of primal and subprimal cuts. There was no interaction between sex and slaughter weight for any of the evaluated parameters. Ham, shoulder, and loin weights linearly increased (P<0.01; R2: 84.3-93.2%) with increasing slaughter weight, which, however, had little effect on primal cuts meat yield. Increasing slaughter weight promoted a linear (P<0.05) and a quadratic (P<0.01) increase of red/green coordinate (a* value) of the loin and ham,...

Mitigating the Compliance Cost of a Phosphorus-Based Swine Manure Management Policy AgEcon
Yap, Crystal; Foster, Kenneth A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Doering, Otto C., III; Richert, Brian T..
Regulatory changes by federal and state agencies portend a switch from nitrogen-based livestock manure disposal policies to phosphorus-based policies. This paper estimates the compliance costs of such a policy change for a hypothetical hog-grain farm in North Central Indiana. The farm includes 1,500 acres of cropland and has the capacity to raise 11,970 grow-finish hogs annually. The farm model also as the potential to produce four different crops on six different land types. A nonlinear math-programming model was developed to determine the optimal mix of management activities for a phosphorus-based regulation. The model allows mitigation of compliance costs via the choice between four different pig diets, three alternative methods of manure disposal,...

Predicting Pork Supplies: An Application of Multiple Forecast Encompassing AgEcon
Sanders, Dwight R.; Manfredo, Mark R..
Conditional efficiency or forecast encompassing is tested among alternative pork production forecasts using the method proposed by Harvey and Newbold. One-, two-, and three-quarter ahead pork production forecasts made by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the University of Illinois and Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, and those produced by a univariate time series model are evaluated. The encompassing tests provide considerably more information about forecast performance than a simple pair-wise test for equality of mean squared errors. The results suggest that at a one-quarter horizon, the Extension service forecasts encompass the competitors, but at longer horizon, a composite forecast may provide greater accuracy.

Purchasing Patterns of Hog Producers: Implications for Rural Agribusiness AgEcon
Lawrence, John D.; Otto, Daniel M.; Meyer, Seth D..
The consolidation of pork production into fewer and larger operations has implications for rural agribusiness that have traditionally serviced producers. This study examines purchasing patterns of existing pork producers for production inputs by size of operation. Distance traveled to purchase inputs and reasons for bypassing the nearest supplier are evaluated as are the characteristics to be competitive in the pork industry are those most likely to bypass the local supplier.

The Influence of Clusters on the Competitiveness of Hog Production: The Example of Northwestern Germany AgEcon
Deimel, Mark; Arens, Ludwig; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
In recent decades the northwestern part of Germany (Weser-Ems region) has come to focus on intensive pork production. This has led to public outrage about the disposal of biological waste, farmers’ complaints about the high cost of leasing land, soaring risks of animal diseases, and the decreasing popularity of intensive animal husbandry. However, despite these problems, due to a beneficial cluster structure, the region is a successful market participant. To shed some light on the relationship between network relationships in clusters and competitiveness, an empirical survey was undertaken to compare this pork-intensive region with non–pork-intensive regions. Bi- and multivariate analyses reveal a better access to knowledge and information on the part of...

The Welfare Effects of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in German Pork Production AgEcon
Heinrich, Barbara; von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephan.
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are an externality of the pork production process. To respond to climate change concerns and reduce GHG emissions, internalizing this external effect using a market-based economic instrument would be economically efficient. We calculate the welfare effects of GHG emissions using a partial equilibrium model of the German pork market. Sensitivity analysis is used to investigate the impacts of emission prices and emission rates on the welfare effects of reducing GHG emissions. Potential overall welfare gains amount to roughly € 360,000 in the base setting and increase to roughly € 3 million when emission prices are tripled. This sensitivity highlights the need for more dependable estimates of key parameters such as emission...

Trade-offs Between Consumer Concerns: An Application for Pork Production AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; van der Lans, Ivo A.C.M..
This paper studies multiple attributes of pork production and analyses the trade-offs that consumers make between them. Results show that without considering the trade-offs, animal welfare and food safety are on average perceived as the most important attributes. However, including trade-offs, Taste and Price become major concerns. Conclusions are nuanced as for a number of segments and specific trade-offs Taste and Price are relatively less important. Results support the implementation of differentiated chain designs with distinct and innovative decisions for trade-offs to be made.

Transparency in Meat Production – Consumer Perception at the Point of Sale AgEcon
Deimel, Mark.
As a result of a large number of food scandals, societal interest in transparency in the food sector has grown considerably. Deficits have been discovered, which new legal frameworks of the EU and the German legislative body have attempted to address. Hence, the creation of transparency in the production process has been the focus of the legislation. In this context, traceability systems for animal-based foods, for instance, have been established (Regulation (EC) 178/2002). In addition to tracking and tracing, one finds in the public discussion an increasing number of demands for further information, for instance information on food safety, animal and environmental protection and generally for sustainability of the production processes for foods. This is...
